The name ‘shamrock’ comes from the Irish name “seamrog” or little clover. The”dear little shamrock” has been a symbol of Ireland since the 18th century and a registered trade mark by the government of Ireland. Used as a symbol of Christianity in Ireland, Saint Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint used it as a metaphor for the Christian Holy Trinity. It is beloved across the world as a mark of Irish heritage
The Claddagh, the most internationally recognised symbol of Irish heritage is made up of two clasped hands holding a crowned heart, and symbolises love, friendship and loyalty. Legend has it that the Claddagh symbol was originated by Richard Joyce, a Galway seafarer kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery in North Africa where he learned the art of a goldsmith. When he was released, nothing could keep him from his beloved Galway where he returned to become a master goldsmith and where he created the Claddagh ring.
